Hi, I'm John. I created this application. If you have questions, suggestions, found bugs (many, I know), or just want to say Hi, Send me an email at hi@foldmation.com.

Innovation

We are not the first to make an origami folding application. But we have gone much further however in terms of being able to specify step by step the kind of crease and fold desired.

It all comes down to thinking about the user interface and experience needed. On one end, we have the most intuitive method of dragging corners. This is the approach taken by others and can only take you so far. One the other end, one can come up with all the different creases and folds possible and come up with a specification that way. This wouldn't work as well since soon, you will realize that one old method will collide with another. Radiolab had an episode on a guy trying coming up with a Chinese language encoding system and ran into a similar situation.

After some time, we distilled many the common creases and folds into just a handfull of commands and keywords. You will see that the vocabulary we used are not the same as those commonly used in the community. I actually find ours better, such as "push in" vs. "inside reversed fold". What's so "reversed" about it? It's just pushing end-points into the fold. We then come up with a domain specific language (DSL) that reads like English and produces a well structured data to present to the Engine. The library for creating this or your own DSL is open sourced at mation-spec.
